: : An Exploration in Dynamic games and user inferred narrative
Thesis Concept
The idea of a user inferred narrative is compelling to me because it so closely matches real experience. When one plays a video game they are playing through a constructed experience created by someone else. Every game has a set of rules that define behavior and dictate a win condition, often times a video game will incorporate a narrative.
I want to explore the concept of offering the user a structure that is narrative driven yet is defined in such a way as to allow the users experience to write the story.
A game narrative serves several functions.
- provides a reason for the users objective
- speaks to level design
- Serves as a vehicle for the games mechanic
My goal is two fold:
- to create emergent games play experience that provide dynamic levels, meaning a user can play the game numerous times and not have the same experience twice (unless they choose too).
- to guide the user with narrative concepts but allow their dynamic play experiences and the users own imagination to write the story
