Thesis Concept

The idea of a user inferred narrative is compelling to me because it so closely matches real experience. When one plays a video game they are playing through a constructed experience created by someone else. Every game has a set of rules that define behavior and dictate a win condition, often times a video game will incorporate a narrative.

I want to explore the concept of offering the user a structure that is narrative driven yet is defined in such a way as to allow the users experience to write the story.

A game narrative serves several functions.

My goal is two fold:

  1. to create emergent games play experience that provide dynamic levels, meaning a user can play the game numerous times and not have the same experience twice (unless they choose too).
  2. to guide the user with narrative concepts but allow their dynamic play experiences and the users own imagination to write the story
